DESCRIPTION:Mihai Netea \nInvited speaker to DTU on November 25th at 13:30\nLocation: Ly101-R3.086 meeting room S01 \nMihai Netea was born and studied medicine in Cluj-Napoca\, Romania. He completed his PhD at the Radboud University Nijmegen\, The Netherlands\, on studies investigating the cytokine network in sepsis. After working as a post-doc at the University of Colorado\, he returned to Nijmegen where he finished his clinical training as an infectious disease specialist\, and where he currently heads the division of Experimental Medicine\, Department of Internal Medicine\, Nijmegen University Nijmegen Medical Center. His main research interests are pattern recognition of fungal pathogens and the induction of antifungal immunity\, primary immunodeficiencies in innate immune system\, and the study of the memory traits of innate immunity. \nTrained immunity: a memory for innate host defense\nThe inability of innate immunity to build an immunological memory\, considered one of the main characteristics differentiating it from adaptive immunity\, has been recently challenged by studies in plants\, invertebrates\, and mammals. Long-term reprogramming of innate immunity\, that induces adaptive traits and has been termed trained immunity characterizes prototypical innate immune cells such as natural killer cells and monocytes\, and provides protection against reinfection in a T/B-cell-independent manner. In contrast\, trained immunity has been shown to be able to induce protection against reinfection in a lymphocyte-independent manner. Non-specific protective effects dependent on trained immunity have also been shown to be induced after BCG vaccination in humans. Complex immunological and metabolic circuits link cell stimulation to long-term epigenetic reprogramming of the function of myeloid cells and their bone marrow progenitors. DESCRIPTION:Cindrilla Chumduri inaugural lecture. \nCindrilla Chumduri specializes in the study of infection\, carcinogenesis\, and regeneration. Her research is focused on the intricate connections that exist between the host tissue microenvironment\, diet and pathogens during the early stages of cancer development. Her work is at the forefront of developing and using patient-derived 3D organoids and in-vivo models to understand the interplay between hostpathogen interactions\, immune responses\, tissue homeostasis mechanisms\, and disease progression. SUMMARY:Novel mechanisms in innate immune defense against virus infections - Søren Riis Paludan - DTU
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis: Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) are broadly perceived to constitute the first line of defense against infections. While PRRs indeed evoke strong antimicrobial activity\, these immune receptors also induce inflammation and are frequently associated with pathologies. This raises the question as to whether additional early immune mechanisms exist\, which are less inflammatory and operate independently of PRRs. Interestingly\, emerging data from us and others suggest that a panel constitutive and stress-induced immune mechanisms do indeed exert host defense independently of PRRs – and often in a non-redundant manner. These data challenge the current thinking in immunology. In this talk\, I will present recent data on novel immune mechanisms in antiviral defense\, and will discuss how such data may fit into the larger scheme of how the immune system ensures efficient early host defense without causing pathological inflammatory responses. \nTime: November 22nd at 13:00 \nLocation: DTU\, building 101 room Ly101-R3.086 S01 \nAbout the speaker: \nSøren Riis Paludan is a professor at the Department of Biomedicine at \, Denmark\, where his research is focused on understanding how the immune system is activated during viral infections and how the immune system can contribute to both defense and disease development (Paludan lab). He has identified novel mechanisms of defense against virus infections and in 2021 he received a Lundbeck Foundation Professorships research grant to study these novel mechanisms in the brain. SUMMARY:Immunology seminar by Valentyn Oksenych: New factors required for lymphocyte development: in vivo models
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, December 9th\, Søren Degn will host a seminar given by Valentyn Oksenych\, PhD\, \ngroup leader at Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine\, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)\, Trondheim\, Norway. \nThe title of this I&I International Seminar is: \n  \n“New factors required for lymphocyte development: in vivo models” \n  \nVenue: Merete Barker Auditorium\, (Bldg. 1253-211 / Lake side lecture theatres) \n  \nTime: 10:00-11:00am \n  \nAbstract: \nDevelopment of B and T lymphocytes depends on the DNA breaks and repair events known as V(D)J recombination. There are two molecular pathways involved in the DNA repair during the lymphocyte development\, non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) and DNA damage response (DDR). Recently\, new accessory NHEJ factors PAXX and Mri were reported. Deficiency for PAXX or Mri\, however\, had no obvious effect on the lymphocyte development. Applying genetic models\, we found that PAXX and Mri are functionally redundant with another NHEJ factor\, XLF. Moreover\, combined deficiency for XLF/PAXX and XLF/Mri results in dramatic\, although distinct\, phenotypes. In addition\, we found that multiple factors from the DDR pathway are required for specific stages of B cell development.
